~ Meet the Woolhalla family ~

Picture
Lewis leads the Woolhalla flock.

Lewis came to our flock in 2021 from a local farm. His coloring is on the lighter side, but he has a mellow temperament, and a shorter, stockier build - a classic, heritage-style Tunis ram.  He sheared a 10 pound fleece in 2021 which, when processed, became 6 pounds of roving.

Picture
The boys enjoy getting out while their pen is cleaned and often joust.

Picture
Longshot is our coming ram, and Langston is his wether buddy. Mellow and curious by nature, Longshot was more dead than alive when he was born - hence his name.  But he's grown and thrived, and as a ram will help maintain parts of our original genetic lines.  Longshot has all the traits we most admire: he's a classic short-legged, heritage-style sheep with long ears, a great temperament, and has creamy wool with striking cinnamon accents.

Picture

Named for the poet Langston Hughes, our Langston is interested in being friends with everyone - sheep and human both!  Generally, the fleeces of wethered sheep are especially nice because life force goes into growing fleece instead of producing testosterone and figuring out which ewes he wants to speed date the next time around.

Picture

Our Mattie Ross is named for the heroine in True Grit as both are scrappy, determined gals. Born 2021, she comes from a local farm and brings completely new genetics to our flock.  She's a smaller sheep, so will shear a smaller fleece.

Our first lambs from Minerva gave us Mercedes, who has it all - rich cinnamon color, marvelous fleece, good conformation.

Picture

Anne with an E
of course comes from Anne of Green Gables, the classic redheaded heroine!

Mom to this gal was Margaret, a ewe with perfect conformation, a long soft perfectly crimped fleece, and especially friendly.  Looks like Anne with an E is going to give us the same.

Miss Nelson

In the stories, Miss Nelson is a sweet-tempered 5th-grade teacher, whose alter ego, Coach Swamp, could kick in when the going got rough.  Our Miss Nelson is also good-natured but will hold her own if anyone wants what she doesn't want to give up!

Picture
Pippi Longstocking is a full-of-joy, red-headed heroine, and our Pippi is as well.
She's petite and maneuvers in the flock where no one expects her to be.  Her fleece is fluffy and a much darker oatmeal color than others of her flockmates.

Picture

Ronia the Robber's Daughter
is a literary sister to Pippi, both the product of Astrid Lingren. Ronia is adventurous, knew her value, and did what she set her mind to do.  Yup, that sums up our Ronia, too! Her fleece is drop-dead gorgeous - long and soft, soft, soft.

Picture
The name of this sheep says it all: she's Lamb-orghini! Born in 2022, she's one of two ewe lambs we kept for ourselves.  Her ivory-colored wool has grown thick and lush and should be a delight to spinners who watch for Tunis wool.  Tall and lanky with deep red coloring, her grandmother had the best mothering skills of any ewe we have ever had, and we're hopeful of the same from her.

Picture
As with Longshot, Freya also has ties to our original flock.  Also like Longshot, Freya is a smaller sheep - small enough that she can ooze through chicken pop-holes between pastures and find all the choice bits before the rest of the flock is brought in through the gate!

The fine print -

1) The next shearing day will be March 4, 2023.
2)  Only a few fleeces will be sold whole or in halves, so if you are interested, contact us for further details, or
contact Tempe Yarn and Fiber
where your $30 deposit will be due.

3) Tunis fleeces generally weigh about 9 lbs unskirted, and other breeds a little more or less.
4) Fleeces generally cost $10/lb.  Contact us for details.
5) Because of our summer temperatures, we do not coat our sheep. But veg is minimal as we work assiduously
to maintain conditions
that provide the best and cleanest fleeces possible.

Our ewes also enjoy a  good run.
